When going on safari in Africa the number of countries to be visited
is often a question and there is no straightforward answer to it.
Each country has often got a diversity of more than one park and
a few days in each of these areas provides for a different experience.
Instead of hopping from country to country one would rather spend
more time in these areas and increase their chances of experiencing
the highs and lows of each area. On the other hand spending time
in different countries will allow for the experience of different
cultures. At the end of the day it is all dependant on the amount
of time that guests have for their trip and the budget available
for this excursion.
3 nights is a recommended stay at a safari camp within an area of
high wildlife concentrations and an extension for a different experience
in the same area for example walking, mokoro or canoeing usually
enhances the experience.
The time of year to travel is another difficult question to answer.
The dry winter months (June to October)in Southern Africa tend to
be characterized by higher wildlife concentrations as the inland
waters dry up and wildlife congregates around the available watering
points. This provides the opportunity to see more but on the same
token one of the most memorable safaris I have guided was in March
at the end of the rainy season in Hwange national park. The rainy
season gives an emerald touch to the scenery and the experience and
usually creates a rich contrast for photographic images and films.
For those traveling for certain highlights and migrations time of
year is key. The flooding of the Makgadikgadi pans in Botswana, the
wildebeest and zebra migration in East Africa and the tree-climbing
lions of the Busanga plains are some examples of highlights that
only occur at certain times of the year. Some areas definitely come
alive during the rainy season when millions of birds migrate into
the area creating a different atmosphere to that of the dry season.
